Lately Luke and I have been praying together a lot more often. Our usual prayer time has been before meals and when he goes to bed. At bedtime I ask him who he wants to pray for and his list usually consists of “Nana! Papa! Ditty (baby), Daddy, Mama, LUKE!, Asher, and a few other friends. When we are done he shouts the loudest “AMEN!” These times of prayer are acting as pedagogy for Luke and have served as a constant reminder for me to be in prayer. Luke is a sensitive little boy and when tantrums come about and tears appear to be unending I often ask Luke if he wants to pray. Squeezing his eyes shut (though I think it is a squint so he can still see out) and Luke prays with me. We pray for God’s help, we thank God for our day, and we pray for our friends around the world and the family that he has given us. These times moments with the Lord and my little boy are good.

Although these times have been happening more frequently, often when I know I should pray I am interrupted with a need – Luke needing to go to the bathroom, Luke just peeing his pants, Eden with a dirty diaper, dinner needing to be made, the house needing to be cleaned, or this or that task needing to be fulfilled. Time and time again no matter how many needs I am able to meet if I fail to connect with God I am still left stressed or filled with anxiety. I am thankful for these moments because they remind me of my need for God. I am reminded of my humanness when I grow weary and impatient and I’m reminded of God’s desire to be in relationship with us. Praying with Luke has reminded me of how God wants us to come to him. Without hesitation and with humility God desires us to come like children coming to their parents. Times of prayer are times that we enter into consciously, and it takes effort.

The weight of raising the next generation has been heavy on my heart and it is causing me to pray. God is maturing me into a woman that will serve him and through this process he is showing me that he likes it when I pray. When I enter into prayer I am fueled with more of God’s love. After praying I feel empowered. Anxiousness fades away as the peace of God comes over me. As a mother to Luke I am in the process of teaching him that God desires to also hear from him! The scriptures teach us the prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective (James 5:16). With the help of the Lord we are raising Luke and Eden to live rightly. Daily we enter into prayer and our God is responding.
